Three years after the release of PS5, is the first party lineup really far inferior to that of PS4 in the same period?
There’s been a rather interesting topic on the internet recently. Some players are complaining ah, saying that PS5 debut these years too few big works, the first party lineup is too pull down. Some even said outright that the PS5 opening first-party lineup was nowhere near as good as the PS4’s contemporaries. So what is the real situation? Today I’m giving you a period roundup. Let’s use data to speak and refuse to mindlessly spray. In addition to the analysis of the lineup from the initial launch of the two consoles. I then break it down to the media ratings and gamer word-of-mouth for each game for each year to compare. It just so happens that it also allows us to look back together at how first-party games performed during the early years of the PS4 and PS5’s launch.
Let’s take a look at the first year of launch, the PS4 debuted on November 15th 2013. There were three first-party games released in the first year, namely Killzone Shadow Fall, Nack Adventure and Photobombers/resogun.
Killzone Shadow Fall.
Release Date: 2013-11-15.
MC Rating: 73 Gamer Rating: 6.8.
Killzone Shadow Fall debuts as the only FPS game for PS4. Its mission is more to showcase the capabilities of the PS4 console. The modeling boasts a higher polygon count, high material mapping with anti-aliasing, higher resolution and a stable frame rate. But without these, the flaws of the game are obvious. A third-rate script, a slightly monotonous flow and an unfriendly wayfinding system. The game ended up with an average media score of 73 and a player score of 6.8.
Knack’s Big Adventure/Knack.
Release date: 2013-11-15.
MC Rating: 54 Gamer Rating: 6.5.
The second game to debut on PS4 is Knack’s Adventure, a cartoon-style adventure game. The difficulty is on the high side and the combat is hardcore. Even on normal difficulty, the main character takes two hits and is dead. If you play with a friend in pairs, the margin of error is a little higher. As a small family game, the game ended up with an average media score of 54 and a player score of 6.5.
Lightning Fighter/Resogun.
Release date: 2013-11-15.
MC Rating: 84 Gamerscore: 7.7.
The last game is Lightning Fighter. It is a horizontal shooter. It was also the first game to be released that year. It is also a showstopper. The graphics are cool enough and the feel is good. The game ended up with an average media score of 84 and a player score of 7.7.
After looking at the lineup of games for the first year of the PS4’s debut, let’s look at the PS5, which debuted on November 12, 2020. There are four first-party games released in the first year. They are Demon’s Souls Remastered, Spider-Man Myers Morales, Sackboy’s Adventure, and Cosmic Robo Wireless Controller User’s Guide.
Demon’s Souls Remake / Demon’s Souls Remake.
Release Date: 2020-11-12.
MC Rating: 92 Player Rating: 8.0.
Developed by Blue Point Studios, Demon’s Souls Remake arguably makes the most of the capabilities of next-gen consoles. The game’s frame rate is very solid while maintaining excellent graphics. the new features of the PS5 controller, too, are well utilized. If I had to say a downside, the game is on the short side and there are too few resurrection points, making it difficult to run through the map. The game ended up with an average media score of 92 and a player rating of 8.0.
Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales/Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Release Date: 2020-11-12.
MC Rating: 85 Gamer Rating: 7.7.
Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is also available for PS4 as part of the PS5 escort, and the improved graphics are obvious compared to its predecessor, which comes with a powerful SSD that allows Spider-Man to swing around the city more quickly and naturally. But as with Demon’s Souls Remastered. The overall flow is short and the playability is average. The game has a final average media score of 85 and a player score of 7.7.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure.
Release Date: 2020-11-12.
MC Rating: 79 Gamer Rating: 8.6.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a 3D cartoon style adventure game. The painting style is cute and very distinctive, and can be played in two players. It is also a family game. This game follows the art style of Little Big Planet. The game has a final average media score of 79 and a player score of 8.6.
Cosmic Robo Wireless Controller Guide/Astro’s Playroom.
Release Date: 2020-11-12.
MC Rating: 83 Gamerscore: 9.2.
Cosmic Robots Wireless Controller Guide is a free-to-play game that comes with the PS5. This game takes full advantage of the new features of the PS5 controller. Features like the adaptive trigger, haptic feedback, HD vibration and more. The game is not very difficult overall and consists mainly of jumping and puzzle solving these box levels. Personally, I think it is one of the most fun games to play in its PS5 debut. The game ended up with an average media score of 83 and a player rating of 9.2.
Looking at the PS4 and PS5 debut first year lineups. The PS5 had three games with an average media score of over 80, which was slightly better than the PS4 in terms of both media scores and gamers’ opinions. Then we move on to the second year. The year came to 2014, and the PS4 had five first-party games released that year. Infamous Second Son, Infamous Dawn, The Last Survivor Remastered, and Driveclub.
Notorious Second Son/inFAMOUS Second Son.
Release Date: 2014-3-21.
MC Rating: 80 Gamer Rating: 8.0.
Infamous Second Son is one of the few 60 fps games available in the early days of the PS4’s launch. The strengths and weaknesses of this game are also clear. The graphics are good, with gorgeous particle effects. However, the game has too many repetitive missions and is rather boring later on. The game has a final average media score of 80 and a gamer score of 8.0.
The Last Survivor Remastered/The Last of Us Remastered.
Release Date: 2014-7-29.
MC Rating: 95 Gamer Rating: 9.2.
The Last of Us Remastered is a cold reset, but is arguably one of the most significant titles in its second year of release for PS4. In addition to the graphical improvements, the frame rate of this game has come to 60 fps. I won’t go into the quality of the game itself, one of the strongest PS3-era masterpieces. The game has a final average media score of 95 and a gamer rating of 9.2.
Notorious Dawn of the Dead/inFAMOUS First Light.
Release date: 2014-8-26.
MC Rating: 73 Gamer Rating: 7.3.
Infamous Dawn is a DLC for Infamous Second Son, but it can run on its own. The main character in this game has been replaced with a female character. The game is small in size, but as a DLC, the overall performance is moderate. The game has a final average media score of 73 and a player score of 7.3.
Driveclub.
Release date: 2014-10-7.
MC Rating: 71 Gamer Rating: 6.3.
Driveclub, also known as “Rainy Day Simulator”. The graphics of the cars in the rain are photo-quality. However, the game’s online environment is rather poor, and it often fails to connect to the server. The game has a final media score of 71 and a player score of 6.3.
On the PS5 side, the following year, 2021, only three first-party games were released. They are: Destruction Racer All-Stars, Return of the Dead and Ricky and Tinker Bell Time Skip.
Destruction Racer AllStars/Destruction AllStars.
Release date: 2021-2-2.
MC Rating: 62 Gamer Rating: 5.0.
Destruction AllStars is a game where you battle it out with race cars. It was given away as a free game last February. The combat is great, but the content is rather one-dimensional. The most important thing is that there is no local multiplayer, and there are few people to match players online. The game has a final media score of 62 and a player score of 5.0.
Return of the Dead/Returnal.
Release date: 2021-4-30.
MC Rating: 86 Gamer Rating: 7.3.
Return of the Dead is a third-person shooter with meat pigeon elements. This game also takes full advantage of the new features of the PS5 controller. The game feels great in your hand when shooting with the adaptive trigger feature. The player will cycle back to the very beginning after each death. The game has a final average media score of 86 and a player score of 7.3.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.
Release Date: 2021-06-11.
MC Rating: 88 Gamer Rating: 8.5.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the latest sequel to the series for the PS5 platform. The most amazing thing about the game is that it takes advantage of the PS5’s super-fast SSD. allowing characters to quickly switch between different timeslots, almost seamlessly without any loading time. The early versions of the game were buggy and often crashed and required a restart. The game ended up with an average media score of 88 and a player score of 8.5.
Looking at the line-up for the second year of release, the PS4 and PS5 are essentially on par.
Finally we come to the third year. This year, 2015, saw a spike in the number of PS4 first-party games, with seven in total. These were: The Order 1886, Curse of Bloodborne, God of War 3 Remastered, Until Dawn, Torn Little Mailman.
The Order 1886/The Order: 1886.
Release Date: 2015-2-20.
MC Rating: 63 Gamer Rating: 6.8.
The Order 1886, again, is one of those titles with terrific graphics. A shooter in third person. The game plays with two black borders at the top and bottom, and with the excellent picture quality, it’s easy to think you’re playing a movie. However, the overall flow of the game is short and the playability is average. The final media score for the game is only 63, with a 6.8 gamer rating.
Bloodborne.
Release date: 2015-03-24.
MC Rating: 92 Gamer Rating: 8.9.
Bloodborne Curse is undoubtedly one of the most popular titles in its third year of release on PS4. Developed by Hidetaka Miyazaki in collaboration with Sony First Party Studios. Compared to previous games in the Souls series, the combat in Bloodborne Curse is more fast-paced and encourages players to attack. It is certainly not less difficult. In addition to the main flow, there are dungeon mazes that can be brushed up on for a long time. The weapon range is small but each weapon has a specific action module. The game has a final average media score of 92 and a gamer rating of 8.9.
God of War 3 Remastered / God of War 3 Remastered.
Release Date: 2015-7-14.
MC Rating: 81 Gamer Rating: 8.3.
God of War 3 Remastered is a reset. The game’s frame rate has become 60 fps and the graphics quality has been drastically improved. Despite the hype, the game’s graphics are up to PS4 standards. The combat is also very violent and crisp, and very decompressive. The game has a final average media score of 81 and a gamer score of 8.3.
Until Dawn/Until Dawn.
Release Date: 2015-8-25.
MC Rating: 79 Gamer Rating: 8.3.
Until Dawn is an interactive cinematic game in the horror genre. The built-in butterfly effect system requires the player to make numerous choices. Each choice affects the final life and death of each character as well as different endings. In the following years the developer released the “Black Phase Collection” series. The game has a final media score of 79 and a player score of 8.3.
Tearaway Unfolded.
Release date: 2015-9-8.
MC Rating: 81 Gamer Rating: 7.9.
Tearaway Unfolded is an enhanced HD version of the original. Making full use of the PS4 controller, the game has a very unique drawing style. It’s a great game for young and old alike. The game has a final average media score of 81 and a player score of 7.9.
In its third year of release, in 2022, there were four first-party games released for the PS5. These are Forza Horizon West, GT Racing 7 and The Last Survivor Part 1.
Horizon Forbidden West.
Release date: 2022-2-18.
MC Rating: 88 Gamer Rating: 8.0.
Horizon Forbidden West was supposed to be Sony’s first first-party game to kick off the year, but it crashed into Elden’s Ring of Law. The 2nd generation has not changed much in terms of gameplay compared to the 1st generation. The best thing about this game is the graphics, which are definitely the best in first-party games. The game has a final average media score of 88 and a player score of 8.0.
GT Racing 7/Gran Turismo 7.
Release date: 2022-3-4.
MC Rating: 87 Gamer Rating: 2.1.
GT Cars 7, Sony’s first-party racing game, is actually of decent quality in its own right. But the game’s built-in kryptonite system has pissed off a bunch of gamers. Some people just jokingly said that the press got the review version with all the cars unlocked. The game ended up with an average media score of 87 and a player rating of only 2.1.
The Last Survivor Part I.
Release date: 2022-9-2.
MC Rating: 88 Gamerscore: 6.1.
The Last of Us Part I is a complete remake of The Last Survivor. Distinct from the reset version released for the PS4 platform. This game has been significantly improved in terms of graphics and frame rate. However, there is no new content in terms of plot and gameplay. It can only be considered as another cold game. But for new players, it’s really worth getting. The game has a final average media score of 88 and a player score of 6.1.
God of War Twilight of the Gods/God of War Ragnarok.
Release date: 2022-11-9.
MC Rating: 94 Gamer Rating: 8.0.
God of War Twilight of the Gods is undoubtedly the most important and successful exclusive game of 2022. Although labeled by players as a God of War 4 sourcebook. But the actual amount of content and combat in the game is much richer and more enjoyable than its predecessor. The graphics, for one, are also good enough. Despite losing out to Ring of Erden at this year’s TGA Best Game Awards, God of War Twilight of the Gods is still the most fun action adventure game I’ve played this year.
Both the PS4 and PS5 are in their third year of release and first party games are starting to take off one after another. In terms of quantity the PS4 is slightly better, but there are three cold ones. In terms of quality, the PS5 line-up is still more dominant.
To conclude, the PS5 had a better overall game line-up than the PS4 in its first and third year of release, while the PS4’s line-up was basically the same as the PS5’s in its second year.
The reason why many players feel that the PS5 first-party lineup is not as good as the PS4 is because the PS5 is backwards compatible and many games.
